Frontier Communications has started notifying over 750,000 individuals that their personal information was stolen in a recent data breach.
The telecommunications giant says it identified the incident on April 14, when it was forced to shut down certain systems to contain it. By mid-May, the company had restored all impacted systems.
Right from the start, the company revealed that the attackers accessed and exfiltrated certain data from its systems, including personal information.
Frontier Communications blamed a “cybercrime group” for the intrusion, without providing specific details on the attack. However, the fact that it was forced to shut down its systems suggested that a ransomware group might have been responsible.
This was confirmed on June 1, when the RansomHub ransomware gang added Frontier Communications to its Tor-based leak site, claiming the theft of 5GB of data, including the names, addresses, email addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers of over two million people.
According to a data breach notice filed by the company with the Maine Attorney General’s Office this week, however, 751,895 individuals were affected by the incident.
Frontier Communications informed the Maine AGO that the attackers exfiltrated names, other personally identifiable information, and Social Security numbers, but did not provide specific details on the compromised data.
The copy of the notification letter that was submitted to the Maine AGO does not detail the compromised personal information either, but mentions that the company does not believe that financial information was affected.
“Upon discovering the incident, Frontier retained leading cybersecurity experts to support the investigation and contain the incident. We also took steps to further strengthen our network security and prevent further access by the third party. We have notified law enforcement and applicable regulatory authorities,” the letter reads.
Frontier Communications is offering 12 months of free credit monitoring and identity theft services to the impacted individuals.
