Dell has confirmed the compromise of one of its environments after an infamous extortion group leaked allegedly stolen information online, but the tech giant claims the stolen data is fake.
News of the intrusion broke after the WorldLeaks group, a rebrand of Hunters International, added Dell to its Tor-based leak site, claiming the theft of 1.3 terabytes of data, containing more than 416,100 files.
The hackers have since released the allegedly stolen information publicly, as their supposed attempt to extort the company has failed.
The compromised information, Dell told SecurityWeek, is either synthetic or publicly available, and does not contain sensitive information that could have been leveraged by the attackers.
“A threat actor recently gained access to our Solution Center, an environment designed to demonstrate our products and test proofs-of-concept for Dell’s commercial customers,” Dell said.
“Data used in the solution center is primarily synthetic (fake) data, publicly available datasets used solely for product demonstration purposes or Dell scripts, systems data, non-sensitive information and testing outputs,” the company continued.
The tech giant pointed out that the compromised demo environment is intentionally separated from its other systems and networks, and that no services provisioned to customers are hosted on it.
“Based on our ongoing investigation, the data obtained by the threat actor is primarily synthetic, publicly available or Dell systems/test data,” the company added.
Dell has refrained from sharing details on when or how the intrusion occurred and whether the attackers made extortion attempts prior to leaking the data.
“Like many companies, we work tirelessly to combat online criminal activity including those seeking to break into our systems and networks,” the company said.
Last year, Dell disclosed a data breach that involved the theft of customer information, including names, addresses, and order details.
