MediSecure Data Breach Impacts Patient and Healthcare Provider Information

MediSecure says data related to prescriptions distributed until November 2023 was compromised in a ransomware attack. The post MediSecure Data Breach Impacts Patient and Healthcare Provider Information appeared first on SecurityWeek.

Australian digital prescription services provider MediSecure says data stored on its systems up until November 2023 was compromised in a recent ransomware attack.

The incident, the company announced last week, originated from a third-party provider, and impacted both personal and health information belonging to patients.

While the full scope of the data breach has yet to be determined, MediSecure revealed over the weekend that the compromised information is related to prescriptions delivered through its system until November 2023.

MediSecure was a prescription delivery service operating nationally until late 2023, after the Australian government awarded this service exclusively to eRx Script Exchange in May last year.

The company provided services enabling paper and electronic prescriptions to be delivered to the pharmacy selected by the individual.

“MediSecure is not a current participant in Australia’s digital health network. As such, this cyber security incident does not impact the prescribing and dispensing of medication,” the company said.

According to MediSecure, the personal information of healthcare providers was also impacted by the incident.

In a Saturday announcement, Australia’s Department of Home Affairs revealed that multiple government agencies are coordinating a response to the incident, underlining that the healthcare system has not been affected.

“The national prescription delivery service, eRx, is not affected by this cyber incident. Consumers can continue to access medicines safely, and healthcare providers can still prescribe and dispense as usual,” the government agency said.

MediSecure said it would notify the impacted individuals as soon as possible.

“Technical and forensic investigations are ongoing. Updates will be provided as those investigations progress,” the Department of Home Affairs said.

SecurityWeek has not seen any ransomware group claiming responsibility for the MediSecure attack.
