Pierce County Library System (PCLS) is notifying over 340,000 people that their personal information was compromised in a data breach.

Between April 15 and April 21, 2025, threat actors accessed PCLS’s network and stole certain data from its systems, the public library says.

“Upon discovering the issue, PCLS immediately commenced an investigation to confirm the nature and scope, and to identify what information could have been affected,” PCLS says in an incident notice on its website.

According to the library, the data breach impacts patrons, as well as current and former employees and their family members.

For patrons, the compromised personal information includes names and dates of birth.

For employees and family members, it includes names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, financial information, credit card details, and health insurance and medical information.

PCLS told the Maine Attorney General’s Office that the incident impacts 340,101 individuals and that it is sending them written notifications.

The affected people are provided with 12 months of free credit monitoring and identity protection services.

PCLS has not shared details on the threat actors responsible for the incident. SecurityWeek has not seen any known ransomware group claiming responsibility for the data breach.
